Street Culture : Fashion off the streets

Updated: Jun 7, 2022

Streetwear, as we know it today, is a derivation of Hip Hop culture. Hip hop’s relationship with the world of fashion has an interesting and very important history. As hip hop arose from the streets with outsider status, it gave birth to its own distinct fashion style and aesthetic — unlike anything seen in the mainstream fashion world — which has developed and evolved in unique ways over time. Late ‘90s hip hop fashion consisted of baggier, less-designer looks. The outfits from this period were marked by baggy jeans, flat bill baseball caps, sports jerseys, sneakers, and boots. This style was adopted by many rappers including Wu-Tang Clan and Snoop Dogg, among other ‘gangster’ rappers at the time. The influence of this style spilled over into the early 2000s. However, in the late 2000s, as hip hop became the new focus of popular music, it similarly became one of the biggest influences on the fashion world. However, In our country, the rise of the ‘Street culture’ came with the emerging Hip Hop scene.

With movies like ‘Gully Boy’ giving way to this fashion revolution. From Baggy cargo to Sneakers and Bucket hats, we have seen a lot of forgotten styles become trendy again. India might have been a tad late to the revolution but it came blazing in with styles and sneakers never seen before. We can see our culture being the inspiration for many local designers, bringing a whole new aspect to Streetwear.

While we can commonly see sneakers and baggy pants on every other person, It is the sense of freedom and a way that helps you express yourself that makes the Street Culture stand out, like a community of like-minded individuals.
